It was a very warm summer day about 5 years ago maybe, my niece and I thought we’d go to Kroger and pick up a few things and cook out on the porch. There’s a road not far from my house, Yellowstone road. We drove up Yellowstone headed for Kroger’s. My niece and I notice a black trash bag in a gully on the side of this road.
The bag was moving. I guess we drove by this trash bag two or three times. I was afraid to touch it or open it, I didn’t want to know what was in it, I had all kinds of crazy thoughts... a rat, a cat, a baby or something dying. Yet, I felt compelled to stop and open the bag. I took a long branch and pulled the bag out in to the road closer to my car, my nice stayed in the car scared to death.
The black trash bag had little holes in different colors, as if it had been used for target practice with a paint gun. I opened the bag up and fleas - a thousand of them - flew out of the bag! I reached into the bag and pulled out a little golden brown skinny quivering pup, not more than 2 to 3 months old. I took her home just hoping to feed and clean her up and find her a good home.
That was 5 years ago and I’m still feeding her, bathing her and providing her with a good home. She’s such a sweet dog. About 9 months ago Merrda and I started visiting the Young Williams Animal Shelter in Knoxville, TN... a great place! We there went about 2 or 3 times a week for about 3 weeks, looking for a sibling for Merrda. Finally a sweet girl boxer picked us, we named her Joy because that’s what she’s been, a Joy to have, and they get along like forever sisters!
About a month ago I took Merrda and Joy for their annual shots, Joy did fine. Merrda did not do well at all... she showed positive for heartworms. I took her to U.T.Veterinary Medical Center for a 2nd, opinion and she they confirmed the diagnosis. My income and financial situation would in no way allow me to pay for her treatment. U.T. gave me some sites to look up on the computer and Praise God the Brown Dog Foundation stepped in. Ms. Carol has been exceptional with guiding me thru the application and communicating back and forth via e-mail and phone with me and the Doctors at U.T.every step of the way.
We want to thank the Brown Dog Foundation for all their support. Merrda and I have some very rough days ahead , about 3 to 6 months, but together and with the Brown Dog Foundation we’ll be just fine. After we get through this I will do my best to support and get support for the Foundation to the best of my ability. I will forever remind folks that if you want a dog it is important to do annual checkups and shots, and imperative to give monthly heartworm medicine.
I’m not very good at telling or writing stores , but I hope and pray that I got my message across, and that being, take care be kind and love your animals and always do there annual checkup and shots, and most of all try never to forget to give them their heart medicine once a month.
