Meeka

WV - 2016

It had been 4 years since I had a dog and I saw a picture of Meeka on Petfinder and she was located fairly close to me. I called the Humane Society and they agreed to hold her for me. I went and we immediately bonded. This was in July of 2015.

She is a goofy dog with a big personality. She is now approximately 1 1/2 years old. In March of 2016 she had a tender spot on her stomach and seemed lethargic. I took her to the vet and they did some tests but could not determine exactly what was wrong. I waited a few days and returned to the vet when she was even more lethargic. She was finally diagnosed with Immune Mediated Hemolytic Anemia. Turns out it is being seen more and more, in both humans and dogs.

Her body was attacking her red blood cells. Her Packed Cell Volume (PCV) count was only 17, when it should be 37-55. She has had many different blood draws and at this time she is improving with her PCV count at 40, hopefully continuing upward toward normal. It is an awful disease, both financially and emotionally draining.

She is on Prednisone and Mycopheolate, as well as many supplements, to suppress her immune system to try to trick her body into making red blood cells again and not attacking them. Your foundation helping me financially with Meeka means the world as I live on a modest income. Thank you so much and hopefully I will be in a position to help at some point.
