Max is a 2 year old English Mastiff that my family and I got as a puppy when he was 10 weeks old. He has always had a close bond with me and my two girls. He really is a gentle giant who loves to snuggle and go on his daily walks. Unfortunately about a year ago, my husband and I had seperated and Max came to live with me and my two kids which was working out great until I had to go back to traveling out of state pretty much every week. I did not have any friends or family to help me out, so I had to board him at a nearby boarding facility. While he was there, he contracted the canine flu, which eventually turned into pneumonia. I got a call while I was working out of town letting me know that Max was breathing heavy and needed to be picked up and taken to the vet. My sister stepped up and took him for me since I could not get home that night. This is when we found out he had a collapsed lung. His regular vet put him in an oxygen tent, but said that was all they could do for him at the moment. He needed to be transported to an animal hospital with 24 hour care.
Everyone was pressuring me to put him down because the costs were going to be high for a large dog. I was already in a financial strain, since I have been paying enormous legal bills for my divorce, but I didn't want to give up on Max. He has always been there for me when I needed him and I wanted to give him a fighting chance. Originally, the animal hospital offered that I could make payments, but that quickly changed. I considered using my rent money to pay the bill so he could receive treatment, but that would have left me homeless. I asked the Emergency Clinic what people do when they cannot afford treatment and their only response was "I cannot answer that." I was appalled to say the least.
That is when I found Brown Dog Foundation. I spent all night scouring the internet to find an organization that could help. I just kept getting turned down left and right. I even tried gofundme, but didn't receive enough to make a dent. This organization saved Max's life. There was no way that I could have afforded it. Max has since made a complete recovery. When I got home from working out of state, he was so happy to see me and just laid against me for what seemed like forever, giving me his "Max hugs". He is back to his old self and happy to be alive. If it wasn't for organizations like this, more dogs like Max would be put down for no reason at all. Our furry friends are always there for us and it's important that we are there for them and other's like them.
