When we first got Lilo she was a spunky little black and tan Chihuahua who we lovingly referred to as “the Tongue”, since all she would do is lick everyone's faces. She has been a part of our lives for 6 years and we absolutely love her. I have three children and they are very close to Lilo. She is very much a part of our family.
Lilo has been a house dog for the six years we have had her. She has always been potty trained and was, for the most part accident free. Then slowly over the past year she started to have accidents in the house. Then the “accidents” were getting out of control. That is when we noticed that she was not as finicky about eating as she used to be. In fact, she was ravenous. Then water drinking started and never stopped. It was at this point that we caught on that something was wrong.
We took her to the vet in November and I was shocked that my once 7 lb little girl was now 13 lbs. They originally diagnosed her with a Thyroid problem and put her on meds. But she continued to decline and more symptoms appeared like a pot belly and panting. The doctor feared Cushings and I then commenced my research on this disease.
When I discovered the extent of care that is required for a Cushinoid dog and the expense I was disheartened. I am a teacher and my husband is a substitute teacher. We have three children, one with expensive monthly meds. I knew this was way beyond the scope of our budget. At first, I thought I would have to let the disease run its course and then put my Lilo to sleep. But then I realized if I could just find some help, we could give Lilo a chance. That is when I found the Brown Dog Foundation. The dedication, care and professionalism during the entire process was impressive. My Lilo has finally started her meds and is on the road to a healthier life. I will keep everyone posted on her progress. I cannot thank Brown Dog Foundation enough for helping my family provide the needed care for our beloved Lilo.
