Dash

NC - 2023

When I met my husband, I had never had a cat. I walked into his apartment, I realized very quickly I have an allergy to those adorable 4 legged friends. Even though this is true I ended up with my first love, my very own kitten from birth, QT. She had piercing blue eyes & pristine snow-white hair. QT would stay by my side when I was sick as well as when I was happy; she was my everything for 7 years until she had a tragic death. Needless to say, I vowed to never have another cat. I never wanted to go through such loss ever again.

Yet, in 2013, just a year later, I received a text from my husband saying he’d found a very unique kitten. I thought, “there is no such thing that could even compare to my precious QT.” He said someone had posted a kitten on craigslist. This special kitten had one green eye & a blue eye, he was white with just a smudge of light brown on the top of his head. I kept telling my husband that if he's not playful then it's not coming home with us.

We pull up & standing there was a child & her mother. The mom proceeds to say that after her daughter visited her father she returned with an unexpected package. Mom says their adult cat was not getting along with this pitiful kitten and all it does is cry (which later we find out he was actually just hungry). I took him into the car, entertained him with a toy & loved on him to see what his demeanor was. I couldn't help but fall in love. We drove to PetSmart and placed him behind the third-row seat while we went shopping for kitten necessities. But, when we returned, he was not there! We ultimately found him under the dashboard behind the steering wheel, earning him the name Dash.

He has been the most exceptional cat; he is beyond the most affectionate & gentle cat there could be. When my husband had major surgery in April 2019 and was bedbound for 6 months, he kept telling the doctor all he wanted to do was return home to Dash, so they could lay in bed & snuggle. In 2022 my husband was diagnosed with a rare, fast progressing cancer leaving him bedbound for another 8 months while recovering from surgery & radiation. Who laid with him every day to provide comfort? Dash.

At the beginning of 2023, Dash returned from his outdoor adventure, which he has done most days of his 10 years of life. Yet this time his bottom canine tooth is sticking out over his lip. He had no other injuries so we had no clue what happened. The next day the vet says per x-ray he has broken his jaw on both sides of the canine tooth, the tooth will be removed & the jaw will be wired at each break. He will also need a feeding tube, fed every 4 hours, for 6 weeks & change bandages frequently.

This is devastating to my husband & I because we've already been through so much with my husband’s illnesses. I’m his 24-hour caretaker & now our precious Dash is hurt and it's going to cost a substantial amount of money we don't have. Thankfully I was able to find Brown Dog Foundation who was willing to grant help with the procedure/aftercare of our treasured Dash.

He was exceptionally great during his healing process. Dash would lay there & purr while we tube fed him and changed his bandages. After about 8 weeks his jaw healed amazingly. Most definitely the perfect cat that I could ever ask for. This April my mother-in-law was diagnosed with cancer with 4 weeks to live. While she was home, Dash laid in the bed with her during her final days. His continued existence and the solace he provided wouldn't have been possible without the financial relief that Brown Dog Foundation provided. There will never be enough thank yous to express how grateful we are.
