About 10 years ago, I was going through some huge life changes and knew my heart was missing something. I had my sweet, little, Frazier dog at home and had recently lost my 17-year-old Scottie mix, Fella, and 14-year-old Angie dog. I knew my heart and my home needed a new little angel to help bring some more sunshine to life. I decided that I was going to a rescue that week and if there was a little Girl dog needing a home, I was going to bring her home with me. That weekend, when I went to the rescue adoption event, there was only one little, fuzzy girl there and it was love at first sight. Allie came home with me that day. She has been the light of my life ever since. We rescued each other.
Allie is the most loving dog I have ever known in my life. She loves all people, kids, cats, and other dogs. We frequently went to the dog park, where she would meet other dogs, but always made time to “meet and greet” all of the pet parents in the park as well, jumping up on the benches with them to say hello. In 2011, I noticed she was developing a slight haze in her eyes and was having frequent “accidents” in the house. She didn’t seem to have the same energy she usually had. I took her to our vet and found out she had developed diabetes. Not only was it making her sick, it was also taking her eyesight. I started her on daily insulin injections and regular visits to the vet to monitor her blood sugar levels. Her eyesight has continued to deteriorate, but she has acclimated so well. Nothing can dull the love in her soul.
In the past year, my life has taken some downward turns, with many hand surgeries for arthritis and degenerating joint disease. Being a catering chef and cook, I have been unable to work, but did what was necessary to keep my menagerie (Allie and a few rescue cats) and myself fed and sustained. When Allie started showing signs that she was not feeling well, with symptoms not due to diabetes, I took her to see our vet, and they suspected she had developed Cushing’s disease. Cushing’s is an expensive disease to test for and to treat. I was beside myself. I wasn’t sure what to do, but I knew that getting Allie help was the most important thing. I have known my wonderful veterinarian, Dr. Blake Malone, at Animalia Health and Wellness, for many years. He suggested I contact Brown Dog Foundation and tell them my story and ask if they could help me with Allie.
I sat down and opened my heart and my laptop and reached out to Brown Dog Foundation with my story and asked if they could help my Allie. They replied to my request for help within 24 hours and I started the process of applying for assistance for my girl. They approved our request and have been helping us with our Cushing’s medication and stem tests for the past 3 months. Without their generosity and assistance, I would not be able to get Allie all of the help and medical attention she needs to continue living the quality of life she deserves. Brown Dog Foundation has been a bright light in what has been a very dark year. I keep praying for things to turn around here, but knowing there is a foundation like Brown Dog, who is helping me keep my Allie with me, tells me there is a light at the end of this tunnel.
