Monkee

TN - 2023

While the Chinese New Year of the Rabbit has just hopped into gear, here at Brown Dog Foundation we’re declaring 2023 year of the Monkee!

After precious little Monkee was adopted more than ten years ago from a rescue in Tennessee by his mom, he developed a severe problem with his eye, and doctors determined that it had to be removed.

Monkee’s mom was naturally distraught by the news but was also overwhelmed by the cost of the surgery. Knowing she couldn’t afford this surgery on her own as she lived off social security, she looked everywhere for help—including the prospect of surrendering Monkee to a rescue center so someone with better financial means could adopt and care for him. But after ten years with this loving pup who had helped by bringing joy, love, happiness and health through exercise into her life, she knew there had to be a way to save her best friend.

Thankfully, Monkee’s mom reached out to Brown Dog Foundation and Monkee’s successful surgery was secured, allowing Mom and Monkee to continue to live happy and healthy in this New Year. Here’s to a bright future replete with belly rubs and long walks for Monkee and Mom. (An edit from Monkee: He says the belly rubs are just for him.)

I’m Monkee and you helped me with surgery. I had a very bad eye that needed to be removed.

I met my Mom when I was one year old. I was living in Chattanooga at a place called a rescue for dogs like me. I had been living on the streets. She drove a long way to meet me and I knew the moment I saw her that she would be my forever mom. She adopted me on a mountain top. That day she had volunteered to transport a big dog to Franklin Tennessee. I was scared at first but it slept all the way.

My mom is on something called social security and when she found out I needed to have my eye removed and how much it was going to cost; she became very sad. I was sad also. She usually gives me belly rubs and massages and she had forgotten. Soon, she found out about you Brown Dog and she sent you a letter and you responded and said yes you could and would help. She became happy again and guess what, yup, I got belly rubs, treats and more. She is special. I’m all she has so she makes my treats so I don’t eat processed food that I don’t need and she makes my dog food. I get a vitamin also. I take care of her by requesting long walks. Her doctor says she needs them. She was so happy when she knew I would get my eye taken care of. She even thought about giving me to a rescue so I would get the care I needed. I would have been soooo sad, we have been together 10 plus years and that is a long time for a dog.

So, Thank you so very much Brown Dog, for your help. I’m healing and I will soon be back to my old self but for right now…I’m going to try to get all the belly rubs I can.
